Allergic reactions occur when the body’s immune system identifies harmless substances as harmful invaders—causing a disproportionate response. Common allergens include pollen, mold, certain foods, medication, pet dander, latex, and dust. Depending on how a person is exposed to the allergen, symptoms can range from respiratory and nasal distress to gastrointestinal or skin problems. Should I go to the ER or Urgent Care for My Allergic Reaction?

While some allergic reactions don’t indicate a true emergency, such as minor hives, watery eyes, or runny nose, others can be life-threatening if left untreated.

Symptoms of anaphylaxis include:

• Swelling of the lips, tongue, face, or throat
• Trouble breathing
• Chest tightness
• Coughing and/or wheezing
• Rapid, fluttering heart rate and low blood pressure
• Nausea and/or vomiting

If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, call 911. Paramedics can deliver care while transporting you to our ER and urgent care facility.

Allergy Treatment

Once you and your medical team have an understanding of what triggers your allergic reaction, treatment can begin. While avoiding allergens altogether is the best way to avoid reactions, this might not be possible, so there is a bevy of over-the-counter and prescription medication options to help keep symptoms at bay. In addition to oral medication, there are injected medications and immunotherapy options if needed. Emergency epinephrine—known as an EpiPen—can also be prescribed to reverse the symptoms of anaphylactic shock in the case of severe reactions.
